Virtualization Technology
VeloxaHost uses Incus — system containers by default, with full KVM/QEMU VMs available. System containers start in 1–2 seconds, share the host kernel, and use ZFS for instant snapshots.
DigitalOcean uses KVM virtual machines (Droplets). This gives stronger isolation per workload but slower boot times (30–60 seconds) and no sub-second snapshot capability.

Networking
VeloxaHost uses OVN (Open Virtual Network) — software-defined networking with per-project isolation, floating IPs, load balancers, and private networks all managed through the same API and console.
DigitalOcean has VPC (private networking), floating IPs (called Reserved IPs), and a managed load balancer ($12/mo per LB). The DO networking model is simpler but less flexible — no BGP, no network-level policy enforcement.

When DigitalOcean Is Still the Better Choice
Be honest about this:
- Managed Databases — DO's managed Postgres/MySQL/Redis is excellent. If you rely on managed DBs, DO wins for now (VeloxaHost is adding these)
- Managed Kubernetes (DOKS) — DO has a mature, affordable managed K8s offering. VeloxaHost is still building this

- Incus power users — If you want to run Docker inside containers, mix VMs and containers, or use OVN networking features — Incus gives you more power than KVM-only
- Simple workloads — If you're running a web app, worker, database, and nginx — VeloxaHost does everything you need at a lower price
Verdict
Choose VeloxaHost if: You're cost-sensitive, want fast instances, are in the US South, or need Incus-specific features.
Choose DigitalOcean if: You need managed Kubernetes, managed databases, the App Platform, or non-US regions.
Both are solid choices for developers. The hyperscalers are overkill for most workloads — either of these will serve you far better than AWS at 5× the complexity.
