There's a question we get asked often: "Why build yet another cloud platform?" The answer comes down to one thing — we're developers who got tired of the existing options.
The Problem We Saw
We're based in Texas, on the Gulf Coast. Like a lot of teams here, we were running workloads across a mix of bare metal, VPS providers, and the big hyperscalers (AWS, GCP, Azure). Each had its tradeoffs:
- Hyperscalers — powerful, but overwhelming complexity, unpredictable bills, and you need a dedicated DevOps engineer just to manage them
- Traditional VPS — cheap and simple, but no networking features, no snapshots, no monitoring, no API worth using
- PaaS platforms — great developer experience but opinionated, expensive at scale, and you lose control the moment you need something custom
There was a gap: something with the simplicity of a VPS, the features of a cloud platform, and an API that developers actually want to use.
The Decision to Build
We started VeloxaHost with a simple principle: give developers the power of a real cloud platform without the complexity that comes with it.
We chose Incus (the open-source successor to LXD) as our virtualization layer. It gives us:
- System containers that start in under 2 seconds — not minutes
- Full VM support (KVM/QEMU) on the same API
- OVN software-defined networking — private networks, floating IPs, load balancers — without any proprietary lock-in
- ZFS snapshots — sub-second, instant restore
No proprietary hypervisor. No per-API-call fees. No surprise bills for egress.
What We Believe
Great cloud infrastructure should be invisible. Developers should be thinking about their applications, not the platform underneath.
